We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

Story

Challenge Date: 10th - 15th June 2014.

Background
In 2013 three of us succesfully completed the 'coast to coast' challenge.  My own reasons on that occasion were that I detest the idea of cancer and what it does to both individuals and families.  It's also the one condition that scares the hell out of me and whilst I can't do anything about it personally - apart from looking after my health & fitness to the best of my ability - I can support those who are able to do something about it ... by raising money for them through sponsorship!  It was a tough challenge, we took it on, enjoyed it (for the most part) and beat our fund raising target by a very respectable margin.

Sincerest thanks and appreciation to all who encouraged me through sponsorship on that occasion.

Since completing that challenge, I've heard so many heart warming stories of how sufferers have been helped, given hope and even cured as a result of the work of Cancer Research UK ..... reason enough, you may think, to go out and do something equally challenging to help the cause.  Believe me, I've been sorely tempted and given it much thought.

Then during the latter part of last year, my youngest brother was diagnosed with a small pancreatic tumour - the worst of all cancers in my opinion.  Following a course of very intensive chemotherapy, we learned that his treatment had been unsuccessful and the tumour had grown and spread - a devastating blow to the family!

Since hearing that difficult news my brother has fought on in his own way. He has been accepted onto an experimental drugs trial that is managed, funded and supported by Cancer Research UK.  Whilst the long term prognosis may be inevitable, in the short to medium term we are not without hope.

Motivation!
So why undertake such a physically challenging task? Simple ... THIS TIME, IT'S PERSONAL!

If those who work to combat this horrible, devastating and indiscriminate disease are unwilling to give up on my brother (or your family - don't we all know someone who has been afflicted by this disease) then why should I.  As long as there are those who are prepared to fight this malevolent condition - hoping to find ways to treat and ultimately defeat it,  then I will do what I can, in my own small way, to help them.

Much as I would like others to join me on this mammoth challenge, I realise that, for most,  it's just not practical.  But you can still take part, by supporting me as I strive to support those who can do something.
